Details
This Kamaka HF-3 Deluxe is made of mango, a lovely tonewood that Kamaka uses for limited runs when they can get it. To our ears, it’s a little sweeter and mellower sounding than koa. This example has colorful rope-pattern wood purfling around the top and soundhole, a style that recalls the higher-end ukuleles during the golden age of Hawaiian ukuleles in the 1920s. Like all new Kamaka instruments, the HF-3 Deluxe is impeccably crafted.
When you add up all the cosmetic variations, the HF-3 tenor is our best-selling Kamaka uke, hands down. We think this model's versatility is part of the reason. It sounds great with the traditional "my dog has fleas" tuning but it also works well with the Low G tuning, as well. Thanks to the longer scale, the frets on a tenor uke are a little further apart, so complex chords are easier to finger as there's more room, making tenor uke the most popular switch for guitar players. It's simple, if you play any fretted instrument, or if you're just starting to, you'll find a use for a fine-sounding tenor like this one. The Kamaka tenor is the does-anything-and-does-it-well ukulele.
