Brian Michael

Repair Crew Member

Brian Michael is the head of our repair department, inheriting the pole from Frank Ford, Gryphon’s co-founder. Brian grew up in New Hampshire and discovered early on he had a natural affinity for playing guitar. He also found that he enjoyed setting up, modifying and repairing his own instruments.

In 2000, that second vocation inspired to move west to Phoenix to attend the Roberto-Venn School of Lutherie. There, he met Frank Ford during one of his annual visits to teach repair techniques. Frank was impressed by Brian’s skill and dedication to the craft and when he graduated in 2002 at the top of his class, we invited him to continue his westward journey and come work with us at Gryphon.

When not at his workbench at Gryphon, Brian builds the occasional electric guitar or bass in his home shop. His instruments have found their way into the hands of many excellent musicians, including some Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famers. Brian still performs regularly and has played in a number of well-regarded local bands. His main band these days is Red Sun Ruins, where he plays guitar and sings.
