Details
This Custom Taylor was designed by our own Richard Johnston. Here's what he has to say about it: This Custom Taylor was ordered with a red cedar soundboard as the cedar warms up the treble response on maple guitars, and being a lightweight and transparent soundboard (akin to Engelmann spruce) the guitar responds to the lightest touch. The cedar chosen has tight grain and significant dark striping. The top bracing is V-class, and the result is a very balanced response with great sustain.
The binding on the body, neck and headstock is cocobolo, with a matching cocobolo soundhole rosette. The neck inlays, both fingerboard and headstock, are koa and boxwood as we wanted as many different varieties of wood as possible for the decorations on this particular model. There's no pickguard on it now, but Taylor included a clear pickguard that can be installed at no charge.
You usually see these Grand Auditoriums with Taylor’s own ES2 pickup installed. While we love Taylor's ES, we chose to order this custom without one so we could hear if a Taylor sounds as good plugged in with another pickup. We decided to try the new Baggs HiFi and the verdict is that yep, this guitar still sounds great amplified. - Richard
About Gryphon’s Aged Maple:
The back and sides were milled from big slabs of figured maple Gryphon's co-founders bought fifty years ago when they were making a lot of banjo necks. This was before the retail store was opened, and once that happened repairs and restoration quickly put most building projects on the back burner, where they stayed as demand for repairs changed Gryphon's direction. This maple has been stored in Gryphon's attic ever since, but Andy Powers and the crew at Taylor has helped us finally put it to good use.
