Details
Martin built this D-21 in 1969 and it has a lot going for it. The first thing everyone notices is the gorgeous, perfectly-matched Brazilian rosewood back and sides. Martin fans know that the D-21 model, first introduced in 1955, was essentially a hybrid Dreadnought combining the binding and appointments of the D-18 with the rosewood back and sides of the D-28. And this D-21 seems to combine the tonal characteristics of both models as well, since it has the rich bass of a D-28 but with brighter, stronger trebles more like what you expect from an early '60s D-18.
This guitar has optimal playability thanks to a recent neck reset here at Gryphon. Everything is original throughout with the exception of the pickguard, which had shrunk and curled and so was replaced with the proper color and shape. The crack to the top below the bridge was repaired here, along with the typical pickguard shrinkage cracks on either side of the pickguard. The finish on the back, sides, and neck is as it left Nazareth, PA almost 55 years ago. The original top finish was buffed following the sealing of the repaired cracks. This guitar didn't get played much, so the original frets look almost new.
