This 1958 Fender Stratocaster offers up a classic vintage aesthetic and that “to die for” Fullerton sound. There are loads of great modern Strats out there but there is just something about a vintage guitar that is impossible to replicate. This Strat has 66 years of stories to tell and we’re ready to hear them all.
The body and neck are dated 10/58, and the two original tone pots are from the 39th week of 1958. The original volume pot, which is long gone, was replaced in the early 1980s. The body was refinished some time ago, and it appears that the pickguard and hardware were masked off and left on the body when the new finish was applied. You'll notice outlines around these parts on the body. The refinishing is serviceable but it’s not smooth and the color isn’t quite right. There is a slight sign of the original 3-color sunburst finish in the pickup & output jack cavities. The neck retains its original finish but has considerable playing wear on both the back and fingerboard.
The original black bottom pickups and three-way pickup selector are contained in the original pickguard. All other hardware is original to the guitar, including the bridge, output jack and the single-line Kluson tuners. The neck pickup reads 5.7k, middle 6.1k and bridge 5.9k. The neck measurements are 0.82” at the 1st fret and .94” at the 12th fret. The neck profile is a comfortable “D” shape, which was a change from the preceding “V’ shape in 1957. The frets are not original, but are still playable with very little wear. The original bridge cover and tremolo arm are included and housed in a modern tweed Fender G&G case.
Now that we have the cosmetics squared away, let’s talk about the sound and feel. You can immediately sense how responsive the pickups are. The neck pickup has a warm glassy sound, and the bridge produces the bright but complex “grit” to cut through any mix. The middle pickup is particularly pleasing and great for rhythm guitar playing. This is one of the better sounding 50’s Strats that we have had the pleasure of listing in a long while.
