Except for the upgrade to geared tuners, this mid-'50s Martin tenor is original throughout with no cracks or signs of repairs. There are some finish dings, the most obvious being to the edge of the headstock. This was made during a prime period for Martin ukes, and America's little musical pal, the ukulele, was riding high thanks to Arthur Godfrey's long tenure on radio and TV. Martin had introduced its tenor uke 30 years earlier, but examples like this one hadn't changed much since as there was no reason to alter or modernize them. It's very playable, but there is some relief to the neck so this is not a vintage uke for those who want low electric-guitar string action.
