This Custom Taylor was designed by our own Matt DeScala. Here's what he has to say about it.
When I heard that we were going to spec out custom Taylor Guitars using old maple we've had since the '70s, I immediately knew I wanted mine to be a Grand Pacific. With the help of our Taylor Rep, Eric, I decided on an Adirondack top, which would give the guitar the punch and clarity I was looking for. Pairing that with our old maple for the back and sides resulted in top-end chime and impressive volume that exceeded my expectations.
I wanted to go for a cosmetically simple style reminiscent of maple dreadnoughts from the past, so I chose tortoiseshell-colored celluloid binding that really pops against the spruce and maple. I took the same approach on the fingerboard, with only side dot inlays, because to me these sleek aesthetics let the flamed maple speak for itself. It's a gorgeous guitar that looks as good as it sounds.
About Gryphon’s Aged Maple:
The back and sides were milled from big slabs of figured maple Gryphon's co-founders bought fifty years ago when they were making a lot of banjo necks. This was before the retail store was opened, and once that happened repairs and restoration quickly put most building projects on the back burner, where they stayed as demand for repairs changed Gryphon's direction. This maple has been stored in Gryphon's attic ever since, but Andy Powers and the crew at Taylor has helped us finally put it to good use.
