Here is a relatively rare artist signature model Gibson L-5 inspired by the jazz and session musician Lee Ritenour. The construction is all solid wood, hand carved archtop with a spruce top and maple back and sides, and a 5-piece maple neck. What makes this artist model different is the dimensions of the body are scaled down from a 17-inch lower bout to a 15 ¾ inch lower bout. This puts the size of the lower bout on the body much closer to an ES-175 than a standard modern L-5. The depth of this L-5 is also slightly shallower at 2 and 5/8th's compared to a standard L-5 body depth of 3 and 3/8th's. Thus it makes it an excellent choice for any player who wants the sound, feel, and look of a Gibson Custom Shop L-5 but with better ergonomics for players with a smaller frame or with physical limitations.
Another nice feature of this L-5 is the stock floating mini humbucker pickup in the style of Johnny Smith. This allows the solid wood carved top to vibrate more freely without any holes cut into the top for pickups allowing for a better acoustic tone. The electric tone from the floating pickup is warm and smooth with a great clarity when playing complex chords. The guitar is all stock as it came from the Gibson Custom Shop with the exception of a strap button added at the neck heel that was professionally installed here at Gryphon. The neck is straight with very little wear on the frets and everything works just like it is supposed to. The finish is all original and free from any excessive wear. Though the body's dimensions are slightly scaled down, it still has that wonderful full L-5 neck profile with a 1 11/16” nut width and the standard L-5 longer scale length of 25.5 inches.
This L-5 comes with its original hard case and the COA from the GIbson Custom Shop with the "Crimson" designation. "Crimson" level refers to a top-of-the-line custom shop instrument with the highest quality woods and most attention to detail.
