Details
There aren't many guitars that can make a Gibson Les Paul Custom look almost plain, but this early Collings City Limits does the trick. The doghair finish on the mahogany body and neck is achieved by using cream-colored pore filler on black-stained mahogany, with a clear top coat. It's such a tricky process that Collings now charges $1500 for the finish option alone. This means a new City Limits like this example would cost a whopping $8500, making this clean example a bargain.
There's very little wear, only a few shirt-button squiggles to the back and light finger scuffs around the knobs, but there is some lacquer crazing lines to the lower portion of the back and the treble side (thanks to the dog hair finish these aren't very noticeable ). This City Limits is from the second year of production, and the black lacquer on the top has settled enough to remind you that the maple top has a lot of figure lurking beneath the surface. Includes the original hardshell case.
