Details
This Athena was custom ordered in 1995 and it is one of a tiny number of 18-inch, 7-string guitars Ted Megas has crafted over the years. Although it's a big guitar it has a 25-inch string scale, which makes it easy to play. This guitar is fully acoustic and has a rich, robust tone that responds equally well to a light, fingerpicking touch or a hard-driving flatpick attack. Thanks to its size this guitar moves enough air to make the low, seventh string really stand out. It’s fitted with a Kent Armstrong floating pickup.
This guitar has an understated look with no fretboard inlays. The tonewoods, however, are all master grade, from the carved spruce top to the highly figured maple back and sides. The mother-of-pearl nut is a subtle, elegant touch. There are no cracks but this was originally ordered by a gigging musician so it did get played quite a lot. Consequently, there are various little nicks and dings to the top plus some slight lacquer checking. The neck angle and string action are both excellent. Includes a custom Calton case from their Calgary era.
