This wine red Tal Farlow was built in 1993, the first year of its reintroduction to the Gibson catalog. The original run was produced from 1962 to 1971 and during that period only around 200 were produced. The Tall Farlow is essentially a fancy version of the ES-350, a 17-inch archtop that was popular with jazz musicians in the 1950s. Like the 1960s guitars, this instrument has laminated maple top and back, a construction technique that helps reduce feedback while still producing a round, mellow tone. Thi guitar is fitted with a pair of '57 Classic Humbuckers. The label is signed by Jim "Hutch" Hutchinson, who was at Gibson when the original Tal models were made in the '60s and oversaw Gibson’s archtop production in the 1990s.
This guitar is in good structural and cosmetic condition. The frets do show a little wear but they have lots of life left in them. It's original throughout, and although there's a headstock crack (see photos), that was repaired here at Gryphon over two years ago by Brian, and the guitar has been strung up and used ever since. The finish is in good shape with just a few light scuffs here and there. There is some minor checking with the top veneer of maple. Include the original hardshell case which is in excellent condition.
