Details
One of the revelations in recent years has been how much better small steel-string acoustics sound than they did years ago. Lighter top bracing, thinner finishes, and with builders at the Collings level, an understanding that you don't just make a smaller guitar by shrinking the overall dimensions of a larger one. Instead, what Collings has done is think of a model like this 002H from the ground up. The shorter string scale means string tension is lower, while the smaller perimeter of the body means the tone woods can be thinner without fear of distortion. The result is a smaller guitar that doesn't sound smaller, in fact in a blindfold test between this Collings 00 and a Collings OM, the listener would be hard-pressed to hear the difference. What you gain is guitar you can tuck under your arm, a songwriter's or singer's companion that vibrates your chest as well as your eardrums.
