c.1922 Martin Style 1

The 1922 date is "circa" because this uke could be a bit earlier or a few years later, but it's an early Style 1 uke for sure. The headstock is definitely hand-shaped, before Martin had made a fixture to standardize the outline of its uke headstocks. It's very light, with a thin top and back and with very light bracing. Frank Ford warmed up the squirrels powering his lathe, and made a nice set of Pernambuco friction pegs (the originals were all missing when we got it). A couple of back cracks were repaired, the back has mostly new stain and French polish finish. Yes, it's seen some work here, after years of neglect, but this Style 1 has the early charm that's missing from all those Style 0 ukes Martin churned out by the trainload a few years later.
