Details
There's koa, and then there's KOA, and the wood used for this Santa Cruz 12-fret certainly belongs in that koa-that-shouts category. Of course we can't be positive but from the way the grain curves out around the bridge tips, and shows the same curves in the same place on the back, it seems fairly certain the wood for both the top and the back were cut from the same thicker board. This was obviously a custom order from someone who enjoys fine woods and subtle but demanding detail, as witnessed by the "rope pattern" mother-of-pearl and abalone bordering the top and soundhole. Coming up on its 40th birthday, this did get played and has minor fret wear and very light finger scuffs to the pickguard. No repairs, no significant dings, and for those who like a little more room for the fingers of their left hand the 1 7/8" wide neck (at the nut) makes this a joy to play.
